Path 2

"Path 2" Scenario:

Patient had surgery but radioactive iodine treatment delayed for some reason (recent CT with contrast within 2 month, cannot take off from work, already on synthroid, etc)

Preparation during clinic visit for "Path 2"

a. Instructions to stay off synthroid/levothyroxine

b. Low iodine diet instructions

c. Printed synthroid script. dosing instructions

d. Lab slips (pre-treatment labs only). Where to go for labs.

g. Treatment and whole body scan order email to Baylor

h. Schedule follow up appt

Proper steps to complete Path 2:

  1. STOP synthroid/levothyroxine (stay off 4 weeks)

  2. START "low iodine diet" to the best of your ability 2 weeks after stopping synthroid/levothyroxine

  3. Do blood work at Labcorp 4 weeks after stopping Synthroid. Call our office the next day to tell the Radioactive Iodine Coordinator you have completed this bloodwork; we need negative pregnancy testing for women, thyroglobulin, and TSH is greater than 30. SCHEDULE your treatment dose date with the coordinator.

  4. Come to Houston Thyroid and Endocrine Clinic the scheduled morning for radioactive iodine treatment dosing. STOP low iodine diet after treatment dose. SCHEDULE a Post-Treatment Whole Body Scan at Baylor clinic 7-10 days AFTER THE TREATMENT.

  5. RESTART Synthroid/levothyroxine 3 days after nuclear treatment

  6. Come back to see the doctor in 6-8 weeks. Complete blood work a week prior to this visit
